Our Environmental Policy

Making the right decision for today and tomorrow.
We at Moralis firmly believe in the sustainable use of resources. The need for traditional corporate sustainability is, of course, greatest among companies that deal with polluting physical manufacturing processes, utilize labor-intensive supply chains in developing nations, or deal with complex global logistics networks that drive greenhouse gas emissions. Moralis is engaged in none of this, so why do we have an environmental policy? The reason is that we are convinced that we can be a force for good in the industry.

Sustainability at Moralis

To us, sustainability does not merely relate to ecological challenges. We believe sustainability is inextricably linked to a business’ long-term well-being and competitiveness. As such, we view it as absolutely vital for Moralis’ continued competitiveness to be at the forefront of all the major areas of sustainability; environmental, social, economic, and human.

Environmental Sustainability

At Moralis, we care deeply about environmental sustainability. This is the challenge perhaps most commonly associated with sustainability, and we continually work to reduce our environmental impact. We strive to minimize our business activities’ impact on the environment and comply with all relevant legal requirements. Furthermore, we are committed to intensifying our emphasis on environmental sustainability as we grow.
Our focus on environmental sustainability influences everything we do at Moralis, from minor day-to-day decisions to comprehensive company-wide policies. Seeing as Moralis is a digital-first company, we are able to rethink some environmentally detrimental processes traditional companies can struggle to change. For example, our digital-first approach and remote working structure mean there is no need for physical meetings. As such, this allows us to minimize travel and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, remote working allows for more efficient use of resources, as we do not need, e.g., large offices that go underutilized after business hours. More generally speaking, we also seek to minimize business-related waste and our impact on ecosystems.

Nevertheless, our efforts to promote environmental sustainability do not only extend to what we are currently doing. We also have robust plans in place to become even more environmentally sustainable in the future. Part of this is our commitment to more accurately track our environmental impact and identify ways to become even more environmentally friendly. Furthermore, we seek to encourage other companies to also work more with environmental sustainability. Once we become profitable, we will launch the Moralis Green Fund. Through the Moralis Green Fund, we will be able to donate funds to environment-centric initiatives that offset environmental impact and support sustainable ventures. Consequently, the Moralis Green Fund will allow us to put our money where our mouth is and financially contribute to environmental sustainability efforts outside of our company.

Proof-of-Stake

We also seek to influence the wider industry in a more environmentally sustainable direction. Although we have no direct control over how other companies choose to work with sustainability, we believe that our policies can indirectly impact how other organizations conduct themselves. For example, we are strong proponents of the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Even those unfamiliar with Proof-of-Stake may have heard the criticism levied against cryptocurrencies using a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism. Some call Proof-of-Work cryptocurrencies environmentally unsustainable since their energy-intensive crypto mining doesn’t solely use renewable energy. Proof-of-Stake consensus solves this issue by reducing a blockchain’s ecological footprint by orders of magnitude. For example, Ethereum (the world’s second-largest blockchain) is set to change its consensus mechanism from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake in the coming months. The Ethereum Foundation estimates that this shift to Proof-of-Stake will lower Ethereum’s energy usage by ~99.95%.

Social Sustainability

We seek to promote social sustainability at every opportunity. Equality and mutual respect are bedrock tenets at Moralis. Furthermore, we actively strive towards better understanding the impact our business structure and internal processes have on people through a social lens. As part of this, we employ a flat organizational structure to promote social well-being and exchange ideas. Eschewing a hierarchical chain of communication means that we can achieve greater internal transparency and helps eliminate employee information asymmetry. Naturally, it goes without saying that we also follow all relevant regulations regarding fair labor practices, human rights, equity, empowerment, and diversity.

Social sustainability issues are inherently difficult to quantify, but we continually work on how to improve social sustainability both within our company as well as through Moralis’ relationships with business stakeholders. For example, a practical example of our work with social sustainability is our comprehensive drive for greater diversity. This is represented through the varied makeup of the Moralis team. Specifically, the Moralis team spans the globe, and our employees stem from a variety of different backgrounds. We view diversity as an integral part of social sustainability and believe our heterogenous team provides a competitive advantage that permeates our business operations. We celebrate diversity and actively promote cultural exchange within our company.

Additionally, we continually strive towards improving our social sustainability. This extends to improving the social impact of all Moralis stakeholders. A part of this is our ongoing work with human sustainability and how we work to retain and promote the existing human capital within Moralis. Lastly, we also aspire to better understand the social impact that our products and technology have on end consumers and make efforts to ensure that this social impact is a positive one.

Economic Sustainability

We recognize that long-term economic sustainability underpins our ability to achieve our company goals, as well as the viability of our other sustainability efforts. Consequently, we strive to make fiscally sound decisions without compromising our commitments to social, environmental, and cultural initiatives to safeguard Moralis’ future competitiveness.

We have an extensive plan for long-term economic growth, with a detailed roadmap to reach profitability. Part of this requires efficient resource allocation and wise financial decisions. We see it as our obligation to all company stakeholders to make decisions that do not undermine our long-term economic sustainability.

Additionally, we firmly believe that economic sustainability can go hand-in-hand with environmental, social, and human sustainability. In fact, we are convinced that overall sustainability is critical to long-term economic sustainability. This extends to efficient use of resources, supporting diversity within our company, and retaining and stimulating our existing workforce. In short, we are committed to maintaining long-term economic sustainability without eroding natural or social capital.

Human Sustainability

Our greatest resource at Moralis is, without a doubt, the human capital found within our company. Acquiring, maintaining, retaining, and encouraging our internal talent and staff is, therefore, an important part of achieving long-term sustainability. Moreover, we believe that providing a safe and healthy workplace is critical to the well-being of our workforce.

Our Human Resources department routinely undertakes internal polls to gauge employee satisfaction as part of our ongoing work to promote human sustainability. These consistently show that we have extremely high employee satisfaction, which is a testament to the work we’ve already done to boost human sustainability at Moralis. We also have industry-leading staff retention. Furthermore, we work hard to upskill our existing staff and help them grow and develop within Moralis. Nevertheless, we are not satisfied with the status quo. This is why we continually strive to improve our internal processes and the way we work.

Our reason for doing all of this is not only that it’s simply the right thing to do. We are strong believers that nourishing the exceptional human capital we’ve already amassed within Moralis creates a positive feedback loop that benefits everyone involved. As such, we believe that all our work with sustainability will result in a workplace that’s more attractive both to employees and other stakeholders, as well as to set a clear example of how companies can work with sustainability.

Sustainability is not just a buzzword to us at Moralis, and we work hard to make sure all the decisions we take are viewed through a sustainability-conscious lens. Simply put, we view it as good business sense to make decisions that will serve us well both today, tomorrow, and in many years’ time.

At Moralis, we don’t shy away from tough challenges, and we aren’t afraid to make the right decisions for the long term.
